LENS DEFINITIONS
 |
Single Vision Lenses
Single vision lenses are prescribed if you need correction for one field of vision, either for distance or near items.
Maycock Optical offers a number of options for the single-vision lens-wearer. Please call us today with your prescription for more information about single vision lens options for you.

Bifocal Lenses
Bifocal lenses have two vision zones separated with a visible line. The bottom segment provides correction for near viewing. The top part of the lens provides correction for distance vision.
Bifocals represent a different way of looking at the world, but most people adjust quite easily. As a bifocal wearer drops his eyes downward to read, the eyes naturally seek out the near-vision portion of the lens.

Trifocal Lenses
Trifocal lenses have three vision zones separated with visible lines. The bottom segment provides correction for near. The top part of the lens provides correction for distance vision. The middle section corrects for viewing things in the intermediate zone, which is farther than the near zone — about arm's length away.
Computers are an excellent example of something that is in a person's intermediate zone. Motorists who need to see in the distance to drive, to see the gauges on the dashboard, and to read a map also would benefit from a trifocal.

Progressive Lenses
Progressive addition lenses (also called "no-line bifocals") correct vision for many different distances without the visible segment lines seen in bifocal or trifocal lenses.
Lenses offer a continuous, gradual change in prescription strength from the lower (reading correction) to the upper (distance correction) portion of the eyeglass lens, providing correction for all distances.
Progressive lenses provide the most natural visual experience you can get in a pair of prescription eyeglasses. They are more than just a defined near and distance correction in one lens. Rather, progressives provide a smooth transition from distance through intermediate to near, with all the in-between corrections included as well.
This constant progression of the prescription means that you can look up to see in the distance, look ahead to view things such as the computer in the intermediate zone, and drop your gaze downward to read and do fine work comfortably close up.
Progressive addition lenses are preferred to bifocals or trifocals, not only because they provide visual correction for distances that traditional bifocals can't, but they also hide the fact that you even need reading glasses.

Aspheric Lenses
Conventional lenses have a front surface that is spherical, shaped much like the surface of a ball. Aspheric lenses have a more complex front surface that gradually changes its curve from the center of the lens all the way out to the edge. Aspherics are ideal for strong prescriptions because they are flatter and thinner. They also provide better vision than ordinary lenses and look better because they lessen farsighted eye magnification and nearsighted eye minification.
Flatter and slimmer looking in frames, the aspherical profile is a perfect match for Maycock Eyecare's fashionable frames. Aspheric lenses are available in single-vision, bifocal and progressive styles. Call or drop in today to find out more about aspheric lenses and how they would help you get a more fashionable, comfortable and optically superior pair of glasses.
