Lens Coatings and Protection
Maycock Eyecare offers sunglasses with many different lens coatings. Almost every pair of sunglasses we sell has a scratch coating applied to the lenses. However, secondary coatings you choose for your sunglasses are based on your visual demands, expected comfort level, and the environmental conditions you will encounter. Coatings are chemical oxides applied to lenses, which may make them stronger in protection, less reflective, or more scratch-resistant. The knowledgeable staff at Maycock Eyecare can help you with this decision and ensure the sunglasses you decide on are just right for you.
Mirrored Coatings
Mirrored coatings make a lens more comfortable and effective for intense sunlight and glare. A thin metallic coating is placed over a regular sunglass lens to create the mirrored look. There are three styles of mirrored coatings available to protect against glare.
A top gradient mirror coating is graduated such that the mirror coating is heaviest at the top of the lens. A double gradient mirror coating is heaviest at the top and the bottom, with the middle part of the lens is not mirrored.
This style of mirror coating provides a buffer against both overhead and surface glare, encountered in activities like skiing or boating. A full mirror coating is completely mirrored with a uniform level of mirror across the entire lens.
Some full mirror lenses provide the most protection against harsh glare available today.
Anti-Reflection Coatings
An anti-reflection coating will reduce reflections from lens surfaces, increase light transmission, image clarity and the overall cosmetic appearance of the lenses. With sunglass lenses, an AR coating is better applied only to the back surface of the lens (the surface nearest the eye).
Because sunglass lenses are so dark, the AR coating can wind up looking smeary on the front surface. Coating the back side helps reduce the reflections of light that enter from behind you and bounce off the surface into your eyes.
A back-side coated sun lens is much more comfortable than an uncoated sunglass. Essilor's new Crizal Alizé anti-reflection coating is 10 times easier to clean than standard anti-reflective lenses and offers outstanding clarity and scratch-resistance.
Scratch-Resistant Coatings
No eyeglass lens material — not even glass — is scratch-proof. However, a lens that is treated on both the front and back with a clear, hard coating does become considerably more resistant to scratching and will prolong the life of your sunglasses.
At Maycock Eyecare we recommend all lenses be coated with Essilor's TD2 scratch-resistant coating to protect both the front and back of your lenses with its tough and durable properties.
